Simon Flower 2008 Set

Sunday, March 16th, 2008

Simon Flower

Righto people, time for my yearly upload.

Recorded this one during my opening slot at the Steve Bug gig at Coherent in Auckland. Normally playing live for the first set of the night totally blows, you’re not a DJ who can choose from any number of tracks to fit the time and place. However this night people started dancing early and I had a blast playing, and I think this recording reflects that.

Only a couple of new tracks here (one of which is forthcoming on Pokerflat), but I’m constantly working on the older ones for live shows, and think they’ve never sounded better.

Once again many thanks to Psurkit and Obscure for hosting!

Beat Up Rx05 - Pitch Black

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

Talking with Paddy Free from Pitch Black.

Real time mulit-media performers, Mike & Paddy push visuals and sound into new dimensions. With a new album “Rude Mechanicals” in stores _now_ New Zealand’s favourite dub’naughts are gearing up for another globe spanning tour. Committed sonic travellers they are heading back to Europe for their eighth visit.

For me. Pitch Black are like the tonal centre of New Zealand electronica. their music captures a sense of time and space that is reflective of our landscape. Attacking sparse rhythms and haunting melodies with studio dub techniques, the results are completly Aotearoa, yet universal in their appeal.

I have an impromptu chat with Paddy on the eve of their upcoming tour. Paddy talks about previous tours, live playing techniques and exposes some of the Pitch Black inspiration and ethos.

Beat Up Rx04 - Pinacolada Records

Wednesday, July 4th, 2007

Talking with Tim from Pinacolada Records

Pinacolada is a contemporary NZ label that blew me away in the 90’s by releasing a House record from Christchurch! Nowadays the label is picking up the sound of indy bands that play the blur between electro and rock. (Rockotronica!)

Before downloads existed (and a return to Uni) I used to see Label Manager Tim pushing wares at Galaxy Records. He has also worked at RDU for an aeon, been a groupie, dabbled as a Dj and is generally a no holds barred advocate of the Christchurch music scene.

The discussion flows around what’s going on with the NZ music scene, some history, some futures, some opinions and even takes some time to come up new genres. Otherwise we are generally doing the beat up!

Simon Flower live at Fu, 21 Jan 2007, Auckland, New Zealand

Sunday, February 11th, 2007

Simon FlowerWell it’s been nearly a year so time for another live set innit.

This was recorded at Fu bar (fu.co.nz) at an Innersound gig (innersound.co.nz), which was nice because Fu and the Innersound boys and me go waaaay back bro…

Anyhoo, well compared to the ‘live at minim’ set (also kindly hosted by the good peeps at psurkit) this is most definitely a club set. It also includes some very fresh material - thrice as nice, late night, send in the clowns, beat street, distance learning and meeting the minutes were all made in a rather productive post-holiday/batteries recharged splurge in the 2 weeks preceding the gig.

Normally I stew on tracks for ages, ditch them, come back to them, ditch them again, have a bit more of a stew and then maaaaaybe get around to recording them – but I decided here to post this set with the new, and as yet un-stewed/ditched/re-ditched/re-stewed tracks.

Hope you enjoy it!

Simon
