Beat Up Rx05 - Pitch Black

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

Talking with Paddy Free from Pitch Black.

Real time mulit-media performers, Mike & Paddy push visuals and sound into new dimensions. With a new album “Rude Mechanicals” in stores _now_ New Zealand’s favourite dub’naughts are gearing up for another globe spanning tour. Committed sonic travellers they are heading back to Europe for their eighth visit.

For me. Pitch Black are like the tonal centre of New Zealand electronica. their music captures a sense of time and space that is reflective of our landscape. Attacking sparse rhythms and haunting melodies with studio dub techniques, the results are completly Aotearoa, yet universal in their appeal.

I have an impromptu chat with Paddy on the eve of their upcoming tour. Paddy talks about previous tours, live playing techniques and exposes some of the Pitch Black inspiration and ethos.
